FAQs

Q: What is MWD?

A: MWD stands for Measurement While Drilling. An MWD tool is one that gives 'survey' or downhole telemetry updates while downhole so that the well can be drilled with current 'near' bit information.

Q: What is LWD?

A: LWD stands for Logging While Drilling.  Logging is the process of collecting borehole information as the sensor travels along the well.  LWD collects that information and passes it to the surface with the MWD tool.

Q: What  does Kambi do?

A: Kambi delivers one of their tools along with an operator to the rig. The operator gives telemetry data to our customer so the rig can drill to the right down hole location.

Q: What is Mud Pulse?

A: Mud Pulse is a way that the information is sent from downhole. A Mud Pulse tool sends the downhole information by restricting the flow of drilling mud. When the drilling mud is restricted, at surface the rig sees a pressure spike. Those spikes are translated on surface into telemetry data.

Q: What is EM?

A: EM is a way that information is sent from downhole. An EM tool sends the downhole information by altering current pulses from the tool. Low current, low frequency pulses are constantly transmitted from the tool. The spikes in current are read on surface by an amplifier that translates them into telemetry data.

Q: What is a UBHO?

A: "Universal Bore Hole Orientating" sub. A UBHO is the sub that lines the MWD tool up with the direction of the motor.  That way the DD can use "tool face" to slide the motor towards target.

Q: What is a Vertical Monitoring Tool?

A: Many wells are drilled vertical.  They must stay within a vertical boundary.  A Vertical Monitoring Tool is an unmanned mud pulse tool that gives telemetry at connection.  If the hole begins to build excessively then more expensive MWD tools are brought in to correct the hole.

Q: What is a pulser?

A: A pulser is the module within an MWD tool that restricts flow of the drilling fluid.  It uses dynamic fluid properties to move the bottom end up and down.  The bottom end restricts flow when instructed to by the pulser.
